The Famous and beloved Sundance film festival has announced it is leaving its home of the past 45 years Park City, Utah for city of Boulder in Colorado. The organisation announced via a statement last week.
Sundance Beginnings
The Sundance institute which is the foundation which runs the festival, was founded in 1981 by Robert Redford. It was founded to foster independence, risk taking and new voices in American film. “That year, 10 emerging filmmakers were invited to the Sundance resort in the Mountains of Utah, where they worked with writers, directors and actors to develop their original Independent project”.
When are they moving?
2027 will mark the Sundance festival first year in Boulder, Colorado which means 2026 will be its final Year in Park City Utah. Full exact dates for the first year in Boulder and their final year in Park City can be found on their website Sundance.org.
Why are they moving?
The official word from the Sundance institute is that per the continual growth of the festival there are not enough theatres and venues in Park City to continue to adequately support the festival further. Boulder was chosen due to its thriving and diverse arts scene that can help continue the growth of the festival.
The damage to Park City
Its no secret that the Sundance film festival was one of the biggest if not the biggest tourist attraction for Park City, Utah. Whilst the city is undoutedly beautiful, Sundance film festival is an internationally renowned and acclaimed festival that brings in attendees that would most likely not travel to the city or even the state. There are unconfirmed reports of the city expecting to loose around $132 million dollars per year in the move.

Sundance film festival has had many acclaimed film premiered over its history, most notbaly in recent years; CODA, Minari, Whiplash, Fruitvale station and Winters Bone.
Has anyone checked in on Lisa Barlow?
Over the years the Sundance film festival has made itself known in pop culture, with mentions and settings in many documentaries, tv shows and reality shows. Most recently in the hit Bravo show the Real Houswives of Salt Lake City. In a show filled with female entrepreneurs, Lisa Barlow held onto the title of Queen of Sundance. Whilst many online and social media commentators have made opinions known of the future of this pairing, no official word has been spoken from The Queen herself.
